Tutanota finds popularity as an encrypted email client in an increasingly security-conscious world

tutanote-teamServices like Gmail have served established a dominating position in the email market, but the rapid growth of secure platforms, like the one developed by German startup Tutanota indicate that many users may be looking for an alternative. Their service launched at beginning of last year and has attracted nearly 100K users, but now they are ready to launch the next iteration of the platform.

Tutanota, which is available on the web, Android, iOS, or the Amazon app store, is a simple email client that the startup bills as a more secure way to communicate, providing automatic encryption of all data (including attachments and subjects of the email) on the device that you are using. If a user sends an encrypted email to someone, they must first send a password via text message. Tutanota touts the fact that all of the data is stored on their data-centers in Germany, arguing that users can rest comfortably with the knowledge that their country has very strict privacy laws and does not require companies to preserve data. The startup says that it can only read the sender, recipient, and date that the email was sent.

The main appeal behind the Outlook service, designed for companies, is that it allows businesses to continue using Outlook for their business communications (assuming that they already do so) and to simply encrypt the emails that are sent and received.The platform is free to the typical user, but the startup generates revenue by charging businesses for the Outlook service, as well as soon offering premium features to those willing to pay a small fee. The differences in price for the Outlook are mainly based on how many accounts the business require, as they can pay from 9.99 Euro per month for 1 account up to 99.90 Euro per month for 50 (or a higher, negotiated price if that is insufficient).

Tutanola tells me that they have picked up an undisclosed amount of funding from Enjoy Venture and MGB-Hannover. However, they also turn to the public, having published information on how people can donate money to the project. Other businesses may keep their intentions under wrap, but Tutanota is fairly open, indicating that they spend 85% of donated funds on developing their platform, with the rest going towards other expenses. They are also frank about their development plans, stating that they are planning to roll out updates like 2-factor authentication, encrypted calendars and cloud storage, custom domains, and PGP and S/MIME-Support.
